Justin Lieberman’s work has cycled through many historical “isms” in a search for conjunctions between art and politics whose resonance might produce novelty, rather than mere repetition. Over the course of the last 25 years, Lieberman has worked in Surrealist, Dadaist, Situationist, and Socialist Realist veins, in a gamble that the exhaustion of these sequences did not necessitate their foreclosure as methods. Most recently, Lieberman’s work with painting, collage, sculpture, and video has been oriented towards increasing formalisation and away from communication, drawing on ideas from 20th century serial music and cubism. Although this might initially appear as conservative Retour à l’ordre in the context of an otherwise anarchic corpus, Lieberman believes that this direction is alligned with the philosopher Alain Badiou’s injunction to artists: “We must become the pitiless censors of ourselves.” To this end, Lieberman makes a strong distinction between educational work and artistic work.
In his lecture to the ADBK Nürnberg, Lieberman will present projects from both of these poles within his practice. Teaching will be addressed by selections from his project “The Student Art Collective”, and Art by way of his work with negative space in sculpture, collage and structural film.
